How beautiful are these photos of a purple-blue water lily opening? These photos show the flower as it unfurls to reveal its glorious, colourful beauty.

Belonging to the family Nymphaeaceae, water lilies are fascinating subjects spanning 70 species from around the globe – from the giant water lilies of South America to the world’s smallest water lily, found in Rwanda, which was only recently saved from extinction. One of the only type of flowers to contain blue petals, the blue water lily is the national flower of Sri Lanka. These hardy water plants dig roots into the soil while floating on the surface, and remarkably are considered a pest is some areas!

Intrigued by their opening power we decided to test a blue water lily out and see the results of the opening stages.  (OK this is a purple-blue water lily, not a pure blue one.)

Often opening in the day time and closing back up at night time is an extraordinary characteristic of this flower. Enjoy the resulting photos I recently took in our Brisbane warehouse, click for larger view.
